In another article we have talked about the Asian handicap and how it works, but among all markets we also find the European handicap (HE). In this article we will explain what it means and the differences with the Asian handicap.
❓ How does the European handicap work?
The European Handicap is a type of bet that gives an advantage in the form of whole numbers to a team. For example, we can find in the Real Madrid – Valencia match a European handicap Real Madrid -1, in such a way that we would only win our bet if Real Madrid wins by at least two goals.
To calculate the result of a European handicap we must subtract or add the handicap (depending on whether the handicap is positive or negative) to the final result and see if our bet is a winner.
Continuing with the example if we have bet on Real Madrid HE -1 we can simulate several scenarios:
• Final result Valencia’s victory would be a lost bet.
• Final result tie would be a lost bet.
• Final result 1-0 Lost bet since after the handicap the result would be 0-0 and therefore a draw, not a victory for Real Madrid.
• Final result 2-0 Bet won since after the handicap the result would be 1-0 and therefore victory for Real Madrid.
In short, we would only win the bet if Real Madrid wins by at least 2 goals
❓ What is the European draw handicap?
This is probably the best known European handicap modality and at the same time the one that causes the most confusion. When we make a European handicap to the tie we are applying the handicap with the final result being a draw, we will continue with the example of the Real Madrid – Valencia match.
If in this match we make a bet on the European handicap to the Draw (Real Madrid -2), we would only win our bet if Real Madrid wins by exactly two goals, since after subtracting the handicap the final result would be a draw. There is also a positive handicap to the draw, it could be HE Draw (Valencia +2) and we would also only win our bet if Real Madrid win by exactly two goals, since after adding the Eu. handicap the final result would be a draw.
ᵛˢ What is the difference between the Asian and the European handicap?
It is very important to know the differences between these two markets since placing a bet on one of these markets without knowing how it works will sooner or later leads to a big mistake.
The main difference between the Asian and the Eu handicap is that the European handicap in no case offers the possibility of totally or partially returning the investment. In the article on the Asian handicap, we saw that there were certain Asian handicaps that offered the possibility of fully returning our investment in the event of a tie, such as the Asian handicap 0.0, or partially returning the investment, such as the 0.25 or 0.75 handicap. In the European handicap we will never have a result that fully or partially returns our investment.
